**PREDOCTORAL
POSITIONS**

Applications are invited for one or two posts of early stage
researchers commencing 1^{st} October 2005, or at a mutually
convenient date thereafter, to work in the research groups of
Professor Colin McDiarmid or Dr Alex Scott, at the Mathematical
Institute, Oxford. Research topics are in the areas of

graph theory in particular topics related to graph colouring

random discrete structures, for example random graphs

extremal and probabilistic combinatorics

connections with statistical physics

The
successful candidate should have less than four years research
experience counting from the date of acquiring the first degree and
should not yet have completed a PhD. The appointments will be made
for up to six months at a stipend of 1994.50 (or 2332.00 euro)
including mobility allowance for a Fellow without (or with) family
charges, and will be paid in sterling (current exchange rate of 1.6
